Quotation marks

Use double or single smart quotes “ ” [not straight quotes ” ” nor French guillemets « »] both in English and French texts

 

Quotation marks are used to cite someone’s words, or to highlight something

 

Single quotes shall only be used as a second level quotation, within an existing quotation

 

After opening a quote and before closing, do not leave a space

Examples1

The BIMCO Guidelines focus on “issues facing the shipping industry onboard ships” but gives the “ISO/IEC 27000 series of Information Security Management Systems (ISMS) standards” as an example of international standards and guidelines that “cover cyber security issues for shoreside operations”.

 

“The number of countries in our Affiliate Country Programme is ‘growing rapidly’ according to our new Affiliate Leader”, the General Secretary said.
